The Risk
Fortunately, no illnesses or severe reactions have been reported at this time. However, consumers should check with their healthcare providers if they have any concerns about potential exposure to the almond allergen and also monitor for any symptoms of allergic reactions.
In a recent article, Food Poisoning News reported on the top nine allergens and the extreme danger of exposure to tree nuts like almonds for those with allergies. Symptoms can include itching, swelling, and difficulty breathing. Anaphylaxis is a significant concern for those with tree nut allergies and so carrying an EpiPen is strongly advised.
Stay Informed
Undeclared allergens in food products is not a rare occurrence. Commenting on this story, a nationwide food safety attorney had this to say: “In just the last week we’ve seen a number of recalls due to undeclared allergens, including those from Lidl, Geisslers Supermarket, and Food Club. It’s a reminder that transparency and accurate labeling are crucial to safety in the food industry.”
