Health department officials in Minnesota have now named at least two of the brands implicated in the 10-State Caramel Apple Listeria outbreak that has allegedly killed five people in an outbreak linked to at least 28 illnesses. Two of those fatalities from Caramel Apples were in Minnesota. And victims include at least nine pregnant women – Listeria is especially dangerous to pregnant women, and can cause miscarriages and still births. The CDC and FDA have stated that as of yet, there have been no confirmed still-births or miscarriages in this outbreak.
Carnival Caramel Apples and Kitchen Cravings Caramel Apples are the only two brands to be named so far, but there may in fact be many more depending on when the Listeria entered the products consumed. At present, at least some health officials are warning Americans not to eat any commercially produced and packaged caramel apples. These tainted caramel apples may still be in consumer homes, too, given that they were likely sold in anticipation of Halloween or thereafter, and many have at least a one month shelf-life. New victims may still be identified.
All the victims, including the Minnesota victims, have been hospitalized. Listeria is very serious, and can lead to invasive meningitis and other serious complications.
