Enoki Mushrooms Recall Expanded Due to Listeria Concerns

On the 13th of January, 2023, the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA), shared the expansion of Utopia Foods Enoki Mushrooms recall, due to concerns over Listeria.

Based in Glendale, NY, Utopia Foods Inc. recalled their Enoki Mushrooms with the Best By Dates of 03/02/2023 and 03/09/2023 due to the products having the potential to be contaminated with Listeria Monocytogenes. Originally, the recall was initiated and published by Utopia Foods  in December, 2022, after “a routine sampling conducted in the State of Missouri revealed the presence of Listeria monocytogenes .” In their recent report, U.S. Food & Drug Safety Administration (FDA) described Listeria as “an organism which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Although healthy individuals may suffer only short-term symptoms such as high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea, Listeria infection can cause miscarriages and stillbirths among pregnant women.”

However, according to one National Listeria Lawyer, Ron Simon, “…if the infection spreads to the nervous system, the symptoms can become more serious. A stiff neck, seizures, the sudden inability to balance, mental confusion, and headache are all symptoms of listeriosis. Your healthcare provider will examine your medical history and the results of your physical exam to determine whether listeria infection is at play.”

The affected Utopia Foods Enoki Mushrooms products were reportedly sold in blue and transparent packaging, marked by the bar code 8928918610017, and the brand of “UTOPIA”. The Enoki Mushrooms were distributed to wholesale markets in the three states CT, NY and NJ.

Individuals who have purchased this product are encouraged to discard the Enoki Mushrooms or return to the location of purchase for a full refund.

For more information, customers may contact Utopia Foods Inc. at 718-389-8898.
