The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) has issued a public health alert concerning ready-to-eat meat and poultry products illegally imported from the Philippines.

Background

The Philippines is not authorized to export meat and poultry products to the United States, making the presence of these items in the U.S. market illegal. The FSIS is currently investigating how the products entered the country.

This alert comes after the discovery of these products during routine surveillance at a retailer.

The affected products were distributed to restaurants and retail outlets across nine states: Connecticut, Delaware, Maryland, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, South Carolina, and Virginia.

Product Details

  • 150-g. can of Argentina BRAND CORNED BEEF
  • 175-g. can of Argentina BRAND CORNED BEEF
  • 260-g. can of Argentina BRAND CORNED BEEF
  • 150-g. can of PUREFOODS CORNED BEEF
  • 210-g. can of PUREFOODS CORNED BEEF
  • 150-g. can of CHUNKEE CORNED BEEF
  • 190-g. can of CHUNKEE CORNED BEEF
  • 7.43-oz. jar of Lady’s Choice Chicken Spread

Consumer and Commercial Action

Consumers who have purchased these products are strongly urged not to consume the products and are instructed to dispose of them carefully, using double bagging to prevent potential access by animals. This precaution is necessary as the USDA cannot confirm whether the products were adequately heated to control pathogens that could affect domestic livestock and poultry.

Retailers and restaurants who have purchased the products are strongly requested not to sell or serve them.

Consumers with questions or concerns are directed to contact John Ducar, the owner of Redsealuxury, LLC by phone at 646-669-4020 or via email at [email protected].

Health Risks

While no adverse reactions have been reported thus far, consumers who have been exposed to the products, and are feeling ill, should contact their medical provider.

Commenting on this article, one national food safety attorney said, “I applaud the FSIS for taking quick action in issuing this alert to help protect public health.  Consuming products from unapproved sources may significantly increase the chance of foodborne illness.  I advise any consumer or business with the affected products to follow the FSIS’ directions for disposal.”
