On the 23rd of December, 2022, the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) announced Wegman Food Markets Inc.’s voluntary recall of their cat grass, micro greens and sweet pea leaves products. The cause of  Wegman Food Markets Inc.’s recall has been reported to be contamination of the sweet pea leaves, cat grass and micro greens with the bacteria Salmonella. With Wegmans stores located in over 7 states, the recalled Wegman Food Markets Inc. micro greens, sweet pea leaves and cat grass products were reportedly distributed in the states New York, Pennsylvania, Maryland, New Jersey, Virginia, Massachusetts, and North Carolina. The three specific affected Wegman Food Markets Inc. products are listed by the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) as following:

Wegmans Food Market issued an official statement, which included and explanation as to why the recall was initiated, stating “We are voluntarily recalling these products because some of the soil they were grown in, supplied to Wegmans Organic Farm by bio365 of Ithaca, New York, tested positive for Salmonella by the supplier. This is out of an abundance of caution.” Regarding the cause for Wegmans’ voluntary recall, a National Food Poisoning Lawyer, Ron Simon, has stated that Salmonella is “… a type of bacteria that causes salmonellosis, a foodborne illness that can be fatal if left untreated. It is one of the leading causes of foodborne illnesses in the world. Salmonella bacteria are commonly found in foods like poultry, eggs, beef, and dairy products. It is especially dangerous for young children, older adults, or people with compromised immune systems.” Individuals experiencing these symptoms are encouraged to contact their personal healthcare provider as well as inform the public health authorities.

Consumers who bought the recalled Wegmans’ Cat Grass, Sweet Pea Leaves, or Micro Greens may return the product to the location of purchase for a full refund.
