Hummus from Moby Dick House of Kabob potentially linked to 9 Salmonella Cases.

The Maryland Department of Health has announced its investigation of a cluster of salmonella cases believed to be linked to hummus sold by the restaurant chain Moby Dick House of Kabob, with locations in the Virginia, Maryland, and D.C. area.

As of September 10, 2019, a total of 9 people have been reported with Salmonella infection to the Maryland Department of Health. This number is expected to grow as more victims seek medical treatment and their cases come up through the reporting process.  Dr. Clifford Mitchell, the Director of Environmental Health for the Maryland Health Department, stated that the cause of infections has not yet been determined, but 8 of the 9 confirmed cases of salmonella have reported eating hummus from Moby Dick House of Kabob. Mitchell went on to say that the health department wanted to warn customers who might have purchased the hummus, from one of the restaurants many locations, to avoid consuming it.

The Maryland Health Department has informed that they are currently communicating with D.C. and Virginia, as the restaurant has many locations in Maryland, D.C, and Virginia. The restaurant chain has voluntarily stopped the sale and production of their hummus products while the investigation is pending. Consumers who bought hummus from any of the restaurant’s locations are being urged to dispose of the product as soon as possible or return it to the sores to get their money back.

Alex Momeni, a spokesperson for Moby Dick House of Kabob, announced:

“The safety and health of our customers is our No.1 concern and utmost priority; we are working diligently to investigate and determine the root cause of this claim.”

According to Momeni, after they received the notice from the Health Department on September 24, 2019, the restaurant moved to conduct their independent testing and hired an outside food safety and environmental consultant to review the matter. Momeni said that samples of their hummus were sent to an ISO Certified Food Testing facility earlier in the week and the results of that testing have come back negative for the presence of any harmful pathogen.

The Maryland Department of Health is advising anyone who ate the hummus and is experiencing symptoms of salmonella such as  nausea, vomiting, diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, abdominal cramping and fever to visit a health care provider as soon as possible. Ron Simon, a national salmonella lawyer, stated “The Salmonella bacterium causes one of the most common intestinal infections in the United States, salmonellosis.  Salmonellosis is the second most common foodborne illness in the United States, and occurs only slightly less frequently than campylobacter infection.”
