Tip Top Poultry Inc. Recalls Additional Products Due to Listeria Concerns.

Tip Top Poultry, Inc. Rockmart, GA, announced that they would be expanding the number of products affected by their recall due to listeria concerns.

The original recall was announced on September 28, 2019, during which the company Tip Top Poultry Inc. recalled an undetermined amount of Ready – to – Eat (RTE) chicken products due to potential listeria contamination. The recall affected an unspecified amount of frozen, cooked, diced, or shredded, RTE chicken products which were produced between January 21, 2019, and September 24, 2019. The potentially contaminated products were distributed nationwide in the United States and Canada; some of the recalled products were sold in retailers such as Food Lion, Aldi, Giant Supermarket, and Jersey Mike’s.

Tip Top Poultry Inc. issued the recall after multiple samples of their products tested positive for the presence of Listeria monocytogenes in Canada. The firm notified the Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) about the potential contamination and recalled product codes ranging from 10000 to 19999 as well as 70000 to 79999. The products subject to recall bear establishment number “Est. P-17453” inside the USDA mark of inspection.

According to FSIS, there have been no confirmed reports of adverse reactions due to consumption of these products. Anyone who has experienced symptoms such as fever, muscle aches, headache, stiff neck, confusion, loss of balance and convulsions sometimes preceded by diarrhea or other gastrointestinal symptoms after eating any of the recalled products should contact a healthcare provider as soon as possible as they are symptoms of listeria. The FSIS has voiced their concerns that some of the recalled products may be in institutional and consumers’ refrigerators and freezers.

Listeriosis is an infection caused by the germ Listeria monocytogenes.  According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the disease primarily affects pregnant women, newborns, older adults, and people with weakened immune systems. People normally contract the disease by eating food contaminated with listeria monocytogenes. The CDC is currently investigating a multistate listeria outbreak which has already affected 24 people, 22 required hospitalization and 2 reported deaths.

For more information on the recalled products can be found on the FSIS website. A list of the products added to the recall on October 9, 2019, can be found also be found on a separate FSIS website.
