Cargill Products Recalls One Lot of Nutrebeef Transition Pellet (MH) Cattle Feed for Elevated Monensin

 The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced Cargill Product’s voluntary recall on one lot of its cattle feed due to mislabeling and elevated levels of monensin on February 2, 2020. The recall encompasses a single lot (382 bags, 50 lbs. each) of Nutrebeef Transition Pellet (MH) cattle feed. Cargill Inc. was made aware of this issue when they received a complaint from a customer. Cargill Inc. immediately responded by issuing a recall in its product. Currently, there have been eight animal deaths at one farm recorded as connected with this lot of cattle feed.

Monensin is an antibiotic commonly added to ruminant type animal feeds. However, too high of a dosage of monensin can prove to be toxic for animals. According to the FDA, too large a dosage of monensin can cause colic-like symptoms in animals such as hypokalemia (low potassium), myoglobinuria (muscle breakdown in the urine), chronic cardiovascular issues, and potential death.

The affected lot of feed was produced at Cargill’s Mcpherson, Kansas, location and has been shipped and distributed to various areas in both Texas and Kansas. The product’s description and labeling is pictured below.

Cargill Inc. asks that anyone in possession of the lot of cattle feed described above return it to its place of purchase or discard it. This recall is being conducted in unison with the FDA. Any further updates can be found at their website.
