Salmonella Found in Bean Sprouts in Sobeys and Foodland Brand Asian Vegetable Mix

A second product has been recalled due to the discovery that bean sprouts containing Salmonella have found its way onto the consumer’s plate. After originally recalling Fresh Sprout International’s branded Fresh Sprout, the Canadian Food Inspection Agency is now recalling Sobeys and Foodland branded Asian Vegetable Mix that contains the same Salmonella infected bean sprouts.

Sobeys Inc. recalled Sobeys and Foodland brand Asian Vegetable Mix on March 11, 2020 after a regulatory food safety test, conducted by the CFIA, found traces of Salmonella. The affected product from both companies has UPC code starting with 208066, and a “best by” date through 03/15/2020. The Asian Vegetable Mix comes in multiple sizes of clear plastic packaging with a black label. No illnesses have been reported due to the Asian Vegetable Mix.

Fresh Sprout International’s branded Fresh Sprouts were recalled on February 21, 2020 after a regulatory food safety test, conducted by the CFIA, found traces of Salmonella. The affected product has UPC code 8 27468 00100 0, with a “best by” date of 02/28/2020, 03/17/2020, and 03/18/2020. Fresh Bean Sprouts come in a clear plastic bag with a green label, containing 454 g of produce. No illnesses were reported due to the contaminated product.

If you have purchased either the Fresh Bean Sprouts or Asian Vegetable Mix, do not consume; dispose of the product or return for a refund. If you have consumed the Fresh Bean Sprouts or the Asian Vegetable Mix, contact your physician immediately. The Canadian Food Inspection Agency continues to investigate the Salmonella outbreak associated with the bean sprouts, testing to see if other products containing bean sprouts also carry Salmonella. Salmonella is particularly dangerous for those with weakened immune systems, including populations such as older adults, pregnant women, and young children.
