Salmonella Outbreak at a Mexican Restaurant in Morris, Illinois, Causes at Least 8 Illnesses

In the first week of September of 2021, at least 8 cases of Salmonella were reported by individuals who had dined at the La Mex restaurant in Morris, IL. The Grundy County Health Department has officially issued a health alert, and is thoroughly investigating the situation with the aid of other public health and safety officials. The La Mex Restaurant has voluntarily closed, and is cooperating closely with the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

A local Morris, IL radio station, WCSJ, announced that “the Grundy County Health Department said that this outbreak does not appear to be directly correlated to operating errors or issues in the establishment, but with the food sold by their suppliers.” An ongoing investigation, there is little information regarding the Salmonella Outbreak at the La Mex restaurant, in Morris, IL.

As one National Food Poisoning Lawyer, Ron Simon, has stated, “unfortunately, salmonella outbreaks linked to restaurants are traditionally caused by cross-contamination, poor employee hygiene, or both. In other cases, it’s a matter of a restaurant having sold food that it bought that was already contaminated.  In those cases, there is usually a larger outbreak linked to multiple establishments who used the same tainted product.  It is too early in this situation to know where the salmonella entered the  restaurant and how it spread so easily.”  Simon also recommends that individuals who believe they may have contracted Salmonella, especially those that have dined at the La Mex restaurant in Morris, IL, should report immediately to their trusted doctor or medical professional.

Customers who have dined at the La Mex restaurant in Morris, IL, anywhere from the dates August 31st to September 7th are highly encouraged by Public Health officials to remain vigilant of any Salmonella-like symptoms, and to tell immediately if any of the preceding occur.
