Outbreak of 127 Salmonella Oranienburg Cases With No Known Source – Current Outbreak of Salmonella Thompson Also under Investiation

On the second of September, 2021, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) announced a large outbreak of Salmonella Oranienburg, one of the nearly 2200 strains of salmonella that have been identified. As od today, this Salmonella Oranienburg outbreak has no known source.  The CDC, FDA, and local health departments are actively collecting trace-back data as part of investigation to identify a source. This large outbreak of Salmonella Oranienburg is now responsible for approximately 127 illnesses across the United States of America.

The 25 states containing Salmonella Oranienburg infected individuals, in the United States of America, now include the following: Arkansas, California, Connecticut, Illinois, Iowa, Kansas, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, North Carolina, North Dakota, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, South Dakota, Texas, Utah, Virginia and Wisconsin.

The CDC Is also investigating a Salmonella Thompson outbreak that has sickened 77.  Again, no source has ye been identified.

A previous large outbreak of Salmonella Oranienburg in 2016 was eventually linked to eggs.

As one National Food Poisoning Lawyer, Ron Simon, has stated:

“A Salmonella infection is usually diagnosed by a positive culture from a stool sample of the infected person. Unfortunately, many people do not provide a stool sample, or their physician fails to order a stool culture, making it very difficult to link the illness to a particular outbreak.  We recommend everyone who suffers from food poisonings get a stool culture to assist health agencies find the source of an outbreak and to assist in recuperating medical expenses and other costs associated with acquiring food poisoning.  I remain confident that the CDC and FDA will identify the source of this dangerous outbreak.”

Symptoms of Salmonella Oranienburg include but are not limited to diarrhea (in some cases bloody), stomach cramps and fever. Health officials are requesting any and all information regarding the Salmonella Oranienburg Outbreak, especially with regards to any food source possibly responsible for the illnesses. Individuals are highly encouraged to report immediately if experiencing any of the prior-listed symptoms to their trusted healthcare provider, and to alert the local health agency.
