Lake Worth, Florida-based Green Life Farms has issued a voluntary recall of a single lot of its baby arugula product. The recall is due to the potential contamination with Salmonella, a bacterium that can cause serious infections, especially in vulnerable populations such as young children, the elderly, and individuals with compromised immune systems.
Background
The recall was initiated after a routine sampling conducted by Green Life Farms detected the presence of Salmonella in a single baby arugula harvest. The company said that subsequent harvests are not affected.
The recalled product was only distributed to several Publix grocery stores. The company has not yet specified which stores and in what states.

Health Risks
Fortunately, no illnesses or injuries have been reported in connection with the recalled product but consumers should check with their healthcare providers if they have any concerns about potential Salmonella exposure and also monitor for any symptoms of infection.
Salmonella is a bacterium that can cause severe gastrointestinal illness in humans. Symptoms typically include diarrhea, fever, and stomach cramps, appearing six hours to six days after exposure to the bacteria. While most people recover without specific treatment, the infection can be severe, especially for young children, the elderly, and individuals with weakened immune systems.
Commenting on this story, one national food safety attorney said, “Salmonella infections can be extremely dangerous to certain populations so I recommend that any consumer with the recalled baby arugula throw it away immediately or return it to the store. This recall is a reminder for consumers to follow proper food handling and storage practices, including washing produce thoroughly before consumption and promptly refrigerating perishable items.”
