Cookie Dough Recall Expands Over Salmonella Contamination Fears

A food safety recall initiated on May 2, 2024 is still ongoing and has now expanded.  Rise Baking Company, doing business as South Coast Baking, is recalling nearly 30,000 cases of cookie dough due to potential Salmonella contamination.  Salmonella is a bacterium that can cause serious infections, especially in vulnerable populations such as young children, the elderly, and individuals with compromised immune systems.

Background

No press release was issued for this recall so how the Salmonella was discovered has not yet been disclosed.

The affected products were distributed to several retailers across multiple states, including California, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Louisiana, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Oregon, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Oklahoma, Texas, and Wisconsin.

Consumer Action

Consumers should search their homes or businesses for the affected products.

As with all recalls, consumers are advised not to consume any recalled cookie product even if it looks or smells safe to eat.

The recalled products should be discarded or returned to the place of purchase.

The company has not yet provided a contact phone number or email address for consumer comments or questions.

Health Risks

The company has not said whether any illnesses or injuries have been reported in connection with the recalled product.  However, consumers should check with their healthcare providers if they have any concerns about potential Salmonella exposure and also monitor for any symptoms of infection.

Salmonella is a bacterium that can cause severe gastrointestinal illness in humans. Symptoms typically include diarrhea, fever, and stomach cramps, appearing six hours to six days after exposure to the bacteria. While most people recover without specific treatment, the infection can be severe, especially for young children, the elderly, and individuals with weakened immune systems.

Commenting on this story, one national food safety attorney said, “This year has seen many food recalls due to potential Salmonella contamination.  I recommend that all consumers with the affected products not consume them and return them to where they were purchased immediately.”
