Perdue Ready-to-Eat Chicken Recalled Due to Metal Contamination

Perdue Foods LLC, based in Perry, Georgia, has initiated a recall of approximately 167,171 pounds of frozen, ready-to-eat chicken breast nuggets and tenders due to potential contamination with metal fragments. The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) announced the recall on August 16, 2024.

Background

The issue came to light after Perdue received consumer complaints about metal wire found in the product. The company then notified FSIS of the problem.

These products were distributed nationwide to retail locations and sold online directly to consumers.

  • The affected products were produced on March 23, 2024
  • All recalled items bear the establishment number “P-33944” on the package.

Consumer Action

FSIS has expressed concern that some of the recalled products may still be in consumers’ freezers. Consumers who have purchased these items are advised not to consume them and should either discard the products or return them to the place of purchase.

Consumers with additional questions or concerns can contact Perdue Consumer Care at 1-866-866-3703.

As part of standard procedure, FSIS will conduct recall effectiveness checks to ensure that Perdue Foods has properly notified its customers and that the recalled products are no longer available for purchase. When available, the retail distribution list will be posted on the FSIS website.

Health Risks

As of the announcement, there have been no confirmed reports of adverse reactions due to consumption of these products.  However, anyone concerned about injury or illness in relation to the recalled products should contact a healthcare provider immediately.

Food with unexpected foreign material could cause severe injury to the mouth, teeth, gums, tongue, throat, stomach, or intestines.  Choking could also occur.

Commenting on this article, one national food poisoning lawyer said, “No one expects to bite into a chicken tender and feel metal.  Any consumer with the recalled products in their freezer should immediately stop use and throw it in the garbage can to reduce the risk of potentially serious injury.”
