Costco Posts Recall Notices for Red’s and Ruiz Foods Food Products Due to Potential Listeria Contamination

International retailer Costco, based in Issaquah, Washington, has posted voluntary recall notices from two suppliers, Red’s and Ruiz Foods due to potential contamination with Listeria monocytogenes (Listeria) in Red’s-brand Mini Burritos and El Monterey Mexican Grill Chicken & Cheese Taquito from Ruiz Foods. Listeria is a bacterium that can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections, particularly in vulnerable populations such as young children, pregnant women, the elderly, and individuals with compromised immune systems.

Background

Both products were recalled in connection to the recent large-scale recall of nearly 10 million pounds of BrucePac ready-to-eat meat and chicken products due to possible Listeria contamination.  Chicken from BrucePac is an ingredient in both products.

Distribution

Neither recall specified where the recalled products were sold although other media outlets said distribution of the recalled Red’s Mini Burritos was limited to the Midwest region.

In a notice posted on its website, Ruiz Foods said that along with the recalled product above, their El Monterey Chicken Enchilada Meal sold at various retail grocery locations was also subject to recall:

  • Product Name – El Monterey Chicken Enchilada Meal
  • Quantity – 1
  • Size – 10.25 oz (291 g)
  • Establishment Number – P 6009
  • SKU – 32350
  • Lot Code – 24267
  • Best by Date – September 23, 2025

The company said that no other El Monterey brand products are affected by the recall.

Consumer Action

As with all food recalls, consumers are strongly advised to discontinue use of the affected products even if they look or smell safe to eat.

Anyone in possession of the recalled products are requested to not sell, serve, or distribute them.

The recalled products can be returned to Costco for a full refund or should be disposed of properly.

Consumers should thoroughly sanitize any surface or utensils that came into contact with the recalled product.

Consumers who purchased the Red’s Mini Burritos product and who have additional questions or concerns can contact the company’s service line at 888-522-9408 from 8 am to 5 pm Central time.

Consumers who purchased the Ruiz Foods’ El Monterey Mexican Grill Chicken & Cheese Taquito product and have additional questions or concerns can contact the company’s consumer line at 800-772-6474 from 7:30 am to 4 pm Central time.

Health Risks

There have not been any reports of illness or injury in connection with the consumption of the impacted products.

Listeriosis, the infection caused by Listeria monocytogenes, is particularly dangerous for certain vulnerable populations. Pregnant individuals, people aged 65 or older, and those with weakened immune systems are at highest risk. Symptoms can include fever, muscle aches, headache, stiff neck, confusion, loss of balance, and convulsions, sometimes preceded by gastrointestinal symptoms. In pregnant individuals, listeriosis can lead to miscarriages, stillbirths, premature delivery, or life-threatening infections in newborns.

Anyone experiencing symptoms of Listeriosis should contact their healthcare provider immediately.

Commenting on this article, one national Listeria lawyer said, “These recalls are part of the larger BrucePac recall and probably won’t be the last. I advise consumers to search their homes for the recalled products and return them to the store if found.”
