Two companies have issued recalls for products due to the potential for spoilage.

A recall by Horizon Organic Dairy, LLC, based in Broomfield, Colorado, first issued on December 13, 2024 for its Horizon Organic Aseptic Plain Whole Milk due to the potential for premature product spoilage remains ongoing.

A recall by Mr. Bing Foods Inc., based in New York, New York, also first issued on December 13, 2024 for its Mr. Bing-brand Sriracha Chili Sauce due to the potential for the product to contain spoilage organisms remains ongoing.

Background

Horizon Organic Dairy, LLC – No press release was issued for this recall. The company has not released how the potential for premature spoilage was discovered.

Mr. Bing Foods Inc. – In a press release, the company said that the recall was initiated after a “higher than normal pressure inside product bottles” was observed, “which may indicate the presence of active microbes and spoilage organisms.” The potential problem was discovered during routine product sampling.

In an email to Food Poisoning News, the company said that no pathogens were found in independent lab testing. Additionally, the company said that the recall is complete and that nearly all of the product has been removed from the market.

Both recalls are classified as Class II recalls, meaning that exposure to the recalled products may cause temporary or reversible adverse health consequences.

Distribution

Horizon Organic Dairy, LLC – The recalled product was distributed in Arizona, California, and Nevada.

Mr. Bing Foods Inc. – The recalled product was distributed in Delaware, New Hampshire, New York, New Jersey, Maryland, Pennsylvania, Florida, Michigan, and Texas.

Consumer Action

Consumers and food service operators in the impacted states should search their homes to see if they have the recalled products.

As with all food recalls, consumers are strongly advised to discontinue use of the affected products even if they look or smell safe to eat or if there are no visible signs of spoilage.

Anyone in possession of the recalled product is requested to not sell, serve, or distribute them.

Consumers should call their local store to see if the recalled Horizon Organic Aseptic Plain Whole Milk can be returned to the place of purchase for a refund.  Mr. Bing Sriracha Chili Sauce may be returned to the place of purchase for a refund and food service operators are asked to return any impacted bottles to their distributor for a refund. Alternatively, all impacted products should be disposed of safely.

Consumers with additional questions and concerns about the Mr. Bing Sriracha Chili Sauce recall can contact the company at 415-967-0696.

Health Risks

The recall notice for Horizon Organic Aseptic Plain Whole Milk did not specify if there have been any illnesses or injuries in connection with the recalled foods.  No illnesses or injuries have been reported in connection with consumption of the recalled Mr. Bing Sriracha Chili Sauce. Any consumer that has been exposed to the affected products, and is experiencing symptoms of food poisoning, or any other adverse reactions, should contact their healthcare provider immediately.

A defective container on food products may allow for the introduction of dangerous pathogens, like Clostridium botulinum, which can cause illness. Botulism is a rare but potentially fatal form of food poisoning that can occur when the bacterium Clostridium botulinum grows and produces toxins.  Symptoms of botulism can include general weakness, dizziness, double vision, difficulty speaking or swallowing, breathing problems, muscle weakness, abdominal distension, and constipation. These symptoms may appear anywhere from six hours to two weeks after consuming contaminated food.

Several other products in the United States have been recalled in recent weeks due to the potential for spoilage, including:

  • Great Value brand chicken broth
  • Jarritos coconut water 17.5 ounce cans due to potentially compromised lid seals

Commenting on this article, the nation’s leading food poisoning lawyer said, “Two completely different products have been recalled for nearly the same reason. Although the possibility of serious illness is likely small, the chance remains nonetheless. I highly recommend that any consumer in possession of either product discontinue use immediately and safely throw them out to minimize the risk of illness.”
