The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) and Importations Pie Che Dolci Inc., based in Laval, Quebec, Canada, have issued a voluntary recall of more Sweet Cream-brand and D. Effe T.-brand frozen pastries due to potential Salmonella contamination. Salmonella is a bacterium that can cause serious infections in animals and humans, especially those in vulnerable populations such as young children, the elderly, and individuals with compromised immune systems.

Background

The recall was initiated after an investigation into an outbreak of foodborne illness by the CFIA. The investigation is still active.

Distribution

The affected products were distributed to a variety of businesses and organizations, including bakeries, hotels, restaurants, cafeterias, hospitals, and other institutions.

The recalled products were distributed to the Canadian provinces of Alberta, Manitoba, Nova Scotia, Ontario, Quebec, and potentially other provinces and territories.

Consumer Action

Consumers should check their homes and businesses for the recalled products.

As with all food recalls, consumers are strongly advised to discontinue use of the affected products even if they look or smell safe to eat.

Anyone in possession of the recalled products is requested to not sell, serve, or distribute them.

Consumers should thoroughly sanitize any surface, utensils, or containers that have come into contact with the impacted products.

The recalled items can be returned to the point of purchase or should be disposed of immediately.

Health Risks

One illness in connection with consumption of the affected product has been reported. Any consumers who are experiencing symptoms after contact with the affected product should contact their medical provider.

Salmonella is a bacterium that can cause severe gastrointestinal illness in humans. Symptoms typically include diarrhea, fever, and stomach cramps, appearing six hours to six days after exposure to the bacteria. While most people recover without specific treatment, the infection can be severe, especially for young children, the elderly, and individuals with weakened immune systems.

Commenting on this article, the nation’s leading Salmonella lawyer said, “This is another recall due to Salmon contamination from these brands. Any consumer with the affected products needs to stop eating them right away to reduce their risk of illness.”
