Oakbrook Terrace, Illinois-based AB World Foods US, Inc. has issued a voluntary recall of Al’Fez Natural Tahini due to potential Salmonella contamination. Salmonella is a bacterium that can cause serious infections, especially in vulnerable populations such as young children, the elderly, and individuals with compromised immune systems.

Background

The presence of Salmonella was discovered by the company during testing.  While AB World Foods US, Inc. continues their investigation, the company says that it has halted distribution of the affected product.

The recalled product was distributed nationwide.

Consumers who have purchased the affected tahini are advised not to consume it.

The product may be disposed of or returned to the point of purchase for a full refund.

Consumers with additional questions or concerns can contact Adifi Burman of AB World Foods US, Inc. by phone at 647-218-0081 from Monday through Friday, 9am to 5pm Eastern time or by email at [email protected].

Health Risks

As of now, no illnesses or adverse reactions have been reported in connection with this product.  However, consumers who have been exposed to the recalled product and are experiencing symptoms of Salmonella food poisoning should contact their healthcare provider immediately.

Salmonella is a bacterium that can cause severe gastrointestinal illness in humans. Symptoms typically include diarrhea, fever, and stomach cramps, appearing six hours to six days after exposure to the bacteria. While most people recover without specific treatment, the infection can be severe, especially for young children, the elderly, and individuals with weakened immune systems.

Commenting on this story, one national food safety attorney said, “Fortunately no consumers have been sickened by this recalled product.  I recommend that anyone that has the recalled tahini in their homes to discontinue use immediately and then either throw it away or return to the store.”
