Another Leafy Green Listeria Recall: Lidl Brand Frozen Chopped Spinach

On January 19, 2022, Frozen Food Development and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced a recall on certain Lidl brand 12-ounce packages of Frozen Chopped Spinach products after a potential Listeria monocytogenes contamination was discovered.

Listeria monocytogenes are a type of bacteria which can cause moderate to severe illness in humans, depending on the person’s age and health. Pregnant women, young children, and the elderly are not only at a heightened risk to contract listeria infection, but also to experience severe effects of the illness. According to Ron Simon, a national food poisoning lawyer,  “infected pregnant women may experience only a mild, flu-like illness; however, infections during pregnancy can lead to miscarriage or stillbirth, premature delivery, or infection of the newborn”. Listeria infection is typically contracted by consuming food or drink that is contaminated with the bacteria, which then gives it the chance to settle in the gut. Symptoms of Listeria infection include fever, headache, stiffness of muscles, nausea, abdominal cramps, and diarrhea.

The contamination of Lidl brand Frozen Chopped Spinach was discovered during a routine food safety testing when a 12-ounce package of the Frozen Chopped Spinach tested positive for the presence of Listeria monocytogenes. The production of the Frozen Chopped Spinach has been temporarily halted while health officials, the FDA, and Frozen Food Development work together to determine the cause of the contamination and to remedy it.

Only two lots of the Frozen Chopped Spinach are included in the recall. All Lidl branded 12-ounce (poly bag) packages of Frozen Chopped Spinach marked with the lot number R17742 or R17963 located on the back of the poly bag and a best by date of 09/10/23 are included in the recall. The recalled products have already been shipped to various retailers in nine different states: GA, SC, NC, VA, MD, DE, NY, NJ, and PA. To date, there have been no reported adverse reactions linked to the consumption of this product.

Anyone who finds that they are in possession of this product should dispose of it or return it to its original place of purchase for a full refund.
