Fort Myers, Florida-based Belgian Yummies has issued an allergy alert due to the presence of undeclared allergens in their ice cream sandwiches and gelato products. The affected items contain ingredients that could pose serious risks to individuals with specific allergies or sensitivities.

Cause of the Recall

The recall was initiated after an inspection by the company and the Florida Department of Agriculture revealed that undeclared allergens coconut, egg, FD&C Yellow #5, peanuts, soy, and wheat were present in the product, resulting from the use of outdated labels at the production facility.

Labels have since been corrected and updated labels were sent to wholesalers with the recalled products.

Distribution

The affected products were distributed in Florida only through wholesale customers.  Products were not sold through retail channels.

Risk

Fortunately, no illnesses have been reported but consumers should contact a healthcare provider if they have concerns about exposure to the undeclared allergens and then continue to monitor for symptoms.

People with allergies to coconut, egg, peanuts, soy, and wheat or those sensitive to FD&C Yellow #5 may experience severe or life-threatening allergic reactions if they consume these products.  In a recent article, Food Poisoning News reported on the top nine allergens and the extreme danger of anaphylaxis for certain individuals.

Consumers with questions or concerns can contact Belgian Yummies at 239-202-8146, Monday through Thursday from 10am to 5pm Eastern Standard Time or via email at [email protected]

According to national food safety attorney Ron Simon, “It’s essential for consumers to stay informed about such alerts to protect their health and well-being. Consumers should check product labels carefully, especially if you have food allergies or sensitivities.”
