Brote de Salmonella causado por Papaya Mexicana en Nueva York: 29 neoyorquinos enfermos.

El brote de salmonella, causado por la papaya mexicana, en Nueva York está superando a otros estados en términos de números de enfermedades por salmonela relacionadas con Salmonella Uganda. En este brote nacional, se han confirmado al menos 81 víctimas a partir del 12 de septiembre. Nueva Jersey tiene 22 casos confirmados, cual es el segundo mayor número de víctimas aparte de Nueva York, y Connecticut ha reportado 15 casos de Salmonella Uganda.

Massachusetts ha reportado 6 casos de Salmonella Uganda, Pensilvania 4 casos de Salmonella Uganda, y Florida un par de casos de Salmonella Uganda.

Nueva York es el centro del brote de Salmonela Uganda – según la Administración de Alimentos y Fármacos, una investigación epidemiológica y una investigación de seguimiento definitivamente vinculó la marca de papayas Cavi a Agroson de LLC de Bronx, Nueva York, el único distribuidor de la fruta importada que está en el centro del brote.

Se cree que las víctimas de Salmonella Uganda consumieron papayas de la marca Cavi importadas de México, un producto y nación que han sido prominentes en las noticias en los últimos años por enfermedades transmisibles transmitidas por los alimentos. (El 74 % de las personas involucradas en el brote han confirmado que comieron papayas antes de empezar a sentirse mal)*

salmonella lawsuitTodas las víctimas se enfermaron en el 2019, con los primeros casos reportados el 14 de enero de 2019, y el último caso de enfermos  confirmados el 16 de julio de 2019. Ha transcurrido suficiente tiempo desde el último caso reportado para darle al personal del departamento de salud suficiente confianza para sugerir que el brote de salmonella ha terminado.

De las víctimas (81 confirmadas hasta ahora) más de la mitad eran del sexo femenino (54 %), una de las victimas es  una bebé de menos de 12 meses de edad, y la más grande fue de 90 años de edad. El promedio de la edad de los 81 casos de salmonella eran 62 años. Ron Simon, un abogado nacional de Salmonella, dijo: “Un elemento particularmente peligroso de este brote de salmonella es que el 53 % de las víctimas, de las cuales la información está disponible, fueron hospitalizadas.” Éste es un número elevado de hospitalizaciones para un brote de salmonela.

*Sólo el 13 % de la gente hispana reportaron comer papayas una semana antes de ser entrevistadas en una encuesta, cual fue conducida en la primera mitad de 2019.
