The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) announced a multi-state outbreak of listeria on December 18, 2019. The outbreak is believed to be linked to hard-boiled eggs produced by Almark Foods of Gainesville, Georgia, no recalled has been issued at the moment but a warning was sent by the CDC to all retailers and foodservice operators to avoid serving the contaminated egg products. As of December 18, 2019, seven cases of people affected by the outbreak have been reported from five different states, of those affected four have been hospitalized and one death has been reported from Texas as linked to the outbreak.

The CDC has informed that they will be working along with the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), and public health officials in several different states to investigate this multi-state listeria outbreak.  According to the CDC, the hard-boiled eggs were linked to the outbreak after the people affected were interviewed, and it was discovered that at more than half had come into contact with the egg products in one way or another. Of the seven affected only five were available to be interviewed, four of the five reported eating products with eggs, and three of the four admitted to eating the hard-boiled eggs from deli salads purchased from grocery stores and in salads eaten at restaurants.

Public Health investigators are currently collecting records from grocery stores and restaurants where people became ill after eating egg products. The CDC has voiced their concerns about the bulk, fresh hard-boiled eggs produced by Almark Foods. The bulk products were packaged in plastic pails for use nationwide by foodservice operators, the CDC fears that the hard-boiled eggs used in the bulk products may be contaminated as well.

Listeriosis is a serious infection caused by eating food contaminated with the bacterium Listeria monocytogenes. Customers who might have eaten the contaminated egg products and are experiencing symptoms such as fever, muscle aches, nausea and, diarrhea, should contact a medical health care provider as soon as they are able to. Listeriosis infections can spread to the nervous system and can cause headaches, stiff neck, confusion, loss of balance, as well as convulsions. According to Ron Simon, a national Listeria Lawyer, Listeria monocytogenes often affects the brain; in particular, it often involves the brain stem and meninges. Listeria is associated with the highest meningitis-related mortality rate.
