The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has issued a food safety alert regarding an outbreak of Salmonella infections associated with potentially contaminated Infinite Herbs-brand organic basil sold at nationwide grocery retailer Trader Joe’s.

Cause of the Recall

The recall was initiated after 12 cases of Salmonella infections linked to the consumption of Infinite Herbs-brand organic basil were reported across seven states.  The CDC also reports that Infinite Herbs will issue a voluntary recall and cooperate with an FDA investigation.

Distribution

Although infections have only been reported from seven states the affected product was distributed to and sold at Trader Joe’s grocery stores in 29 states and in Washington DC:  AL, CT, DE, FL, GA, IA, IL, IN, KS, KY, MA, MD, ME, MI, MN, MO, NC, NE, NH, NJ, NY, OH, PA, RI, SC, TN, VA, VT, WI.

Packages of Infinite Herbs-brand organic basil have been pulled from Trader Joe’s locations and distribution of the affected product to stores was stopped on April 12, 2024.

Product Details

  • Product:
    • Infinite Herbs Organic Basil
    • Packaging:  Clear plastic clamshell containers
    • Size:  2.5 ounces
    • Dates of Sale:  Between February 1, 2024 and April 6, 2024
    • UPC#:  8 18042 02147 7

Consumer Action

Consumers who have purchased the affected product during the stated date range should discard it immediately or return to any Trader Joe’s location for a full refund.  Any surfaces that have been in contact with the contaminated basil should be sanitized.  Consumers with questions or concerns can contact Trader Joe’s Customer Relations at 626-599-3817 or through their product feedback page.

Businesses’ Responsibility

The CDC has requested that any business that has purchased the affected Infinite Herbs organic basil to not sell or use and to thoroughly clean any surface that has come in contact with the product.

Health Risks

Fortunately, no deaths have been reported, but one person has been hospitalized.

Consumers should check with their healthcare providers if they have any concerns about potential Salmonella exposure and also monitor for any symptoms of infection.

Salmonella is a bacterium that can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections.  Vulnerable populations such as young children, the elderly, and individuals with weakened immune systems are especially susceptible. A Salmonella infection may present suddenly and include the following symptoms that include, but are not limited to:

  • Gastroenteritis
  • Diarrhea, Vomiting, and/or Nausea
  • Typhoid Fever
  • Pain, Fever, Abdominal Tenderness, Bloody Stools, and Severe Diarrhea
  • Bacteremia
  • Infections in other parts of the body other than the initial site of contamination

A Salmonella outbreak from contaminated cantaloupe in 2023 sickened at least 230 people, caused 96 hospitalizations, and resulted in 3 deaths, as previously reported in Food Poisoning News.

Commenting on this story, one national food safety attorney said, “I applaud the CDC and FDA for taking swift action.  Salmonella contamination is one of the most frequently reported causes of foodborne illness.  Anyone who believes they have been exposed to or has symptoms of Salmonella infection should seek medical attention immediately.”
