Church Brothers Farms Recalls Green Onions Due to Potential Salmonella Contamination

Church Brothers, LLC, based in Salinas, California has announced a voluntary recall of  1,271 cases of green onions due to potential Salmonella contamination remains ongoing. Salmonella is a bacterium that can cause serious infections, especially in vulnerable populations such as young children, the elderly, and individuals with compromised immune systems.

Background

Routine sampling by the Canadian Food Inspection Agency uncovered the potential presence of Listeria. Church Brothers, LLC reported those findings to the U.S. Food and Drug Adminstration (FDA).

Distribution

The recalled products were distributed to a small number of “retail and foodservice customers” in Alabama, California, Connecticut, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, New York, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, and Virginia.

The customers have been notified of the recall and the company is working with them to ensure compliance.

Consumer Action

As with all food recalls, consumers are strongly advised to discontinue use of the affected product even if they look or smell safe to eat.

Anyone in possession of the recalled product is requested to not sell, serve, or distribute them.

The impacted product should be disposed of immediately.

Consumers should thoroughly sanitize any surface or utensils that came into contact with the recalled product.

Consumers with additional questions or concerns can contact the company by phone at 877-590-0428 from 8 am to 4 pm PST or by email at [email protected]. 

Health Risks

The company said they are not aware of any illnesses or adverse reactions in connection with the recalled product.  Any consumer who has been exposed to the affected product, and is experiencing symptoms of Salmonella infection or food poisoning, should contact their medical provider immediately.

Salmonella is a bacterium that can cause severe gastrointestinal illness in humans. Symptoms typically include diarrhea, fever, and stomach cramps, appearing six hours to six days after exposure to the bacteria. While most people recover without specific treatment, the infection can be severe, especially for young children, the elderly, and individuals with weakened immune systems.

Commenting on this story, one national Salmonella lawyer said, “Salmonella can cause very uncomfortable cases of gastroenteritis, which can last anywhere from 4 to 7 days. To best protect themselves and their families, I recommend that any consumer with the recalled onions throw them away immediately.”
