The US Food and Drug Administration (“FDA”) and the Centers for Disease Control (“CDC”) are currently investigating a number of illnesses linked to the consumption of Diamond Shruumz-brand Chocolate Bars, Cones, and Gummies.

Background

Diamond Shruumz-brand products are available online and in various retail locations nationwide, including smoke/vape shops, and retailers selling hemp-derived products (such as cannabidiol or delta-8 THC).  The full list of affected retailers remains unknown.

As of June 7, 2024, 12 cases have been reported across eight states:  Alabama (1), Arizona (4), Indiana (2), Kentucky (1), Missouri (1), Nevada (1), Pennsylvania (1), and South Carolina (1).

All affected individuals sought medical care and10 required hospitalization.

The FDA, along with the CDC, America’s Poison Centers, and state and local authorities, said they are actively investigating the cause of the illnesses and will provide updates as new information becomes available.

Product Details

  • Brand – Diamond Shruumz
  • Products – Microdosing Chocolate Bars, Infused Cones, Micro Dose and Macro Dose Gummies

Consumer Action

Consumers should check their homes for the affected products and discard any remaining products that are found.  The FDA advises against purchasing or consuming any flavor of these Chocolate Bars, Cones, or Gummies at this time.

The products are marketed as candy, which may appeal to children and teenagers, making it crucial for parents and caregivers to be aware of the risks and discuss with their children.

Retailer Action

Retailers are urged not to sell or distribute Diamond Shruumz-brand Chocolate Bars, Cones, or Gummies and should securely hold the product until further instructions are provided for its safe disposal or return.

Health Risks

No deaths have been reported in connection with consumption of the affected items.  However, anyone who consumes the affected products should contact their healthcare provider immediately and/or call the Poison Help Line at 800-222-1222 and let them know that Diamond Shruumz-brand Chocolate Bars, Cones, and/or Gummies were consumed.  Healthcare providers are asked to report related illnesses to local health departments and/or the Poison Help Line.

People who fell ill after consuming these chocolate bars reported severe symptoms, including seizures, central nervous system depression (such as loss of consciousness, confusion, and sleepiness), agitation, abnormal heart rates, hyper/hypotension, nausea, and vomiting.

Commenting on this story, one national food safety attorney said, “Fortunately, no deaths have been reported in relation to these products.  However, since several people have become severely ill, I strongly recommend that consumers dispose of any remaining products immediately.”
