FDA Alert for Certain Food Products Due to Rodent Contamination

The U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) has issued an alert for various ready-to-eat and shelf stable food products that include infant cereals, baking ingredients, and other food that were imported and distributed by Pan-African Food Distributors Inc., dba East African Boutique LLC, due to potential contamination from products being stored in unsanitary conditions.

Background

The FDA inspected the company’s distribution center in Louisville, Kentucky this month, which revealed the presence of an active rodent infestation.

The firm has been required to halt operations because they are lacking a necessary permit. All products distributed by the company have been quarantined.

The company will not be permitted to reopen until the infestation is addressed. An official recall of all infected products is potentially forthcoming.

Distribution

Information on what stores and in what states the products were distributed to has not yet been made available.

Consumer Action

Consumers should check their homes and businesses for the impacted products.

As with all food recalls, consumers are strongly advised to discontinue use of the affected products even if they look or smell safe to eat.

Anyone or any business in possession of the products is requested to not sell, serve, donate, or distribute them.

Consumers should thoroughly sanitize any surface, utensils, or containers that have come into contact with the impacted products.

Any item from the company should be disposed of immediately.

Health Risks

According to the National Park Service, “Rodents directly transmit a number of pathogens that can cause human disease in the United States, including hantavirus, leptospirosis, rat bite fever, and salmonellosis.”

Any consumer who has become ill from consuming or interacting with any product from the company should contact their healthcare provider immediately.
