FDA Announces Fresh Location’s Recall of Protein Snack Tray and Protein Trail Mix for Possible Connection with Almark Foods’ Listeria Contamination

On January 7, 2020, Fresh Location in Lenoir, Tennessee announced a recall on its 6.44 oz total weight 4 compartment Protein Snack Tray products and its 3.52 oz total weight Protein Trail Mix products. The company announced the recall due to a concern that these products may have become contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes.

Listeria monocytogenes are potentially harmful bacteria that can cause Listeriosis, a mild to severe foodborne illness. Listeriosis is most severely affects those with weakened immune systems such as the young, elderly, and pregnant. Listeriosis poses a particular threat to expectant mothers as it can cause miscarriages and stillbirths. The most common accompanying symptoms with Listeriosis are fever, headache, stiffness, nausea, stomach cramps, and diarrhea.

The contamination of Fresh Location’s Protein Snack Tray and Protein Trail Mix products is believed to be linked with the Almark Foods Listeria contamination announced a couple weeks ago. Officials believe this connection to be likely because Almark Foods’ Gainesville facility supplies the hard boiled eggs found in Fresh Location’s Protein Snack Tray and Protein Trail Mix.

The FDA says that the recalled products may have already been distributed to various grocery stores, vending machines, and hospitals in Illinois, Missouri, Tennessee, Georgia, South Carolina, North Carolina, Kentucky, Virginia, Indiana, and Mississippi. The best buy dates included in the recall for the Protein Snack Tray are 12/21/19, 12/22/19, 12/24/19, 12/27/19, 12/28/19, 12/29/19, 12/31/19, 01/03/20, 01/04/20 and 12/23/19, 12/24/19, 12/26/19, 12/29/19, 12/30/19, 12/31/19, 01/02/20, 01/05/20, 01/06/20 for the Protein Trail Mix. The packaging of the concerned products can be viewed here.

The FDA urges anyone in possession of these products discard them or return them to their original place of purchase. For any further information visit the FDA website.
