15 people sick, 1 dead from ground beef sold in Florida Publix stores
Over 130,000 pounds of potentially contaminated ground beef products were recalled on September 19, 2018. Some of the meat, produced by Cargill Meat Solutions, was found by the US Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) to be contaminated with e. coli. A total of 18 people became sick after eating the meat, including 6 who were hospitalized and 1 who died because of the severity of their food poisoning.
Most of the illnesses occurred in Florida, with 15 people becoming ill there after purchasing the ground beef products from Publix stores. The death occurred in Florida. Testing on leftover ground beef found at the home of one person who became ill confirmed the presence of e. coli in the meat.
On September 19, 2018, Cargill Meat Solutions recalled ground beef products that were produced and packaged on June 21, 2018. Products are labeled with the establishment number “EST. 86R” inside the USDA mark of inspection. The products were shipped to retailers nationwide. One person each in Colorado, Massachusetts, and Tennessee reported illness related to the consumption of the contaminated meat. The illness onset dates ranged from July 5 to July 25, 2018.
The Centers for Disease Control & Prevention (CDC) has determined that the outbreak is over; however, there may still be contaminated ground beef in consumers’ freezers. Anyone who has purchased any of the recalled ground beef products should not eat them.
