Food Poisoning Injures 250 Guests at Wedding

Suspected food poisoning has sickened more than 250 people during a wedding celebration in India.  According to Telangana Today, the unfortunate incident occurred in the state of Gujarat after guests consumed buttermilk served at the celebration.  Shortly afterward, the guests became severely ill, with symptoms of diarrhea and vomiting.  Medical attention was immediately required after the condition of many deteriorated.

The impacted guests were promptly taken to a village hospital for care and continued monitoring.  However, the small facility faced significant challenges in managing a food poisoning outbreak of this magnitude.  Because of limited bed capacity, the sheer volume of patients seeking medical assistance swiftly inundated the local hospital.

The paper also reports that due to the insufficient space, numerous guests resorted to sleeping on the floor or makeshift accommodations on hospital benches.  Care was further impacted as the facility was also struggling with a shortage of workers.

As of this writing no deaths or severe complications have been reported.  Many guests are starting to recover although some remain hospitalized.

The incident highlights the critical importance of food safety measures during large gatherings. Proper food handling, storage, and preparation are essential to prevent such outbreaks.

This story is reminiscent of similar recent weddings that have not gone to plan.  At a Cape May County, New Jersey wedding in April 2016, 42 guests became ill, displaying symptoms of nausea, severe diarrhea, fever, and abdominal pain.  Although the venue was not implicated in misconduct, norovirus was thought to be the most likely cause of the outbreak.

In September 2022, over 60 guests at a Comal County, Texas wedding became ill from Salmonella-tainted food served at the event.  Improper food preparation was determined to be the likely cause of the contamination and led to a lawsuit against the wedding venue.

As the affected individuals of the Gujarat wedding recover, authorities have opened an investigation to prevent similar incidents in the future.

Commenting on this article, one national food safety attorney said, “Weddings are a time of  joyful celebration but caution is always warranted.  Caterers, wedding venues, and other food suppliers must ensure safe and hygienic practices to protect guests from foodborne illnesses.”
