Ground Beef Recalled Over Metal Contamination

Ada Valley Meat Company, based in Ada, Michigan, has initiated a recall of approximately 1,065 pounds of fully cooked frozen ground beef products due to potential metal contamination. The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) announced the recall after the company received a consumer complaint about metal pieces found in the product.

Product Details

The recalled items consist of frozen ready-to-eat ground beef products packaged on May 28, 2025, and May 30, 2025. The affected products are sold in 20-pound cardboard boxes containing four 5-pound plastic bags labeled “Ada Valley FULLY COOKED GROUND BEEF.” Products with pack date 5/28/25 carry lot code 35156, while those with pack date 5/30/25 have lot code 35157.

All recalled products display establishment number “EST. 10031” within the USDA inspection mark.

Distribution

The contaminated items were distributed across five states: California, Delaware, Illinois, Michigan, and Pennsylvania.

Background

The recall was triggered when Ada Valley Meat Company notified FSIS about a consumer complaint reporting metal fragments discovered in the ground beef product.

FSIS maintains ongoing recall effectiveness monitoring to ensure companies properly notify customers and remove products from consumer access. The agency plans to publish retail distribution lists on its website at www.fsis.usda.gov/recalls when available.

The recall may expand to include additional products, and FSIS advises consumers to check back regularly for updates. The agency routinely conducts these checks as part of its food safety oversight responsibilities.

Consumer Action

The inspection service warned that some recalled products might display different establishment numbers on labels due to additional distribution and processing by other facilities. Consumers should carefully review all product and label information provided in the recall announcement.

FSIS expressed particular concern about products potentially stored in institutional freezers. The agency has urged institutions that purchased these products to immediately stop serving them and either dispose of the items or return them to their place of purchase.

Consumers with additional questions and concerns about the recalled item can contact Gerrit Rozeboom, President of Ada Valley Gourmet Foods, at [email protected].

Health Risks

No confirmed injuries related to consumption of these products have been reported to date. However, consumers who believe they may have been injured are advised to consult with healthcare providers.

According to national food poisoning law firm Ron Simon & Associates, any food contaminated with metal can be incredibly dangerous to eat.

Food contaminated with foreign material has the potential to cause severe harm, including choking, injury, illness, damage to teeth, gums, tongue, throat, mouth, stomach, and intestines or even death in most people. Infants, the elderly, and recent surgery patients could also be at extreme risk of serious injury.
