In collaboration with the Food and Drug Administration, Hamtramck, Michigan-based Home Style Foods, Inc. has issued an allergy alert and recall for their product, Kowalski Simply Sides – Jack’s Potato Salad due to presence of an undeclared egg allergen, which could pose serious risks to individuals with egg allergies or sensitivities.

Food Poisoning News recently reported on a similar recall due to undeclared allergens by grocery chain Lidl.

Cause of the Recall

A routine inspection by Home Style Foods’ quality assurance department found that an incorrect label was applied to the product during the packaging process. While the top and front label correctly identify it as Kowalski Simply Sides – Jack’s Potato Salad, the nutrition and ingredients panel on the back was mistakenly labeled as Very Berry Strawberry.

Distribution

The affected product was distributed to 25 retail locations in Michigan, including 21 Kroger stores, Diamond Dot Market, Holiday Market Royal Oak, Larry’s Foodland, and Tenuta’s Market.

Product Details

  • Product: Kowalski Simply Sides – Jack’s Potato Salad
  • Sell By Date: 04/29/2024
  • Packaging:  Clear plastic cup and lid
  • Size: 16 ounces
  • UPC: 754721282701

Consumer Action

Those with egg allergies or sensitivities should not consume the affected product.  Consumers who purchased this product should return it to the point of purchase for a full refund or throw it away if a return is not possible.  For any questions or concerns, consumers can also contactHome Style Foods Inc. at (313) 874-3250.

Health Risks

Fortunately, no illnesses have been reported but consumers should contact a healthcare provider if they have concerns about exposure to the undeclared allergens and then continue to monitor for symptoms.

People with allergies or sensitivity to eggs who consume these products may experience severe or life-threatening allergic reactions including mild skin rashes, moderate gastrointestinal distress, and anaphylaxis in extreme cases.  Symptoms can take several hours to present or may occur within minutes.

Commenting on this article, national food safety attorney Ron Simon said, “This recall reinforces the need for consumers, especially those with certain allergies, to carefully read food labels so they can make informed choices to safeguard their health and the health of their loved ones.”
