Karoun Wrongful Death Lawsuit

A Karoun Wrongful Death Lawsuit, or a wrongful death lawsuit against another producer of soft cheeses, is likely following reports of the first death among the two dozen Listeria victims liked to the consumption of soft cheeses in recent years. Karoun is one of the cheese makers to have been linked to the Listeria outbreak by the FDA, CDC and/or other health agencies. The CDC now says 24 victims (in the last five years) have been identified in California (14), Colorado (1), Illinois (1), Massachusetts (2), Michigan (1), New York (2), Ohio (1), Tennessee (1), and Washington (1). The victims were all infected with one of five rare strains of Listeria monocytogenes between August 8, 2010 and the present, with the strains being genetically similar. At least 1 of the victims has now died, 21 have been hospitalized, and five have been pregnant women, with one suffering the loss of her pregnancy.

According to the CDC, 4 of 7 of the who could recall the specific brand of soft cheeses they ate named a cheese sold by Karoun Dairies, Inc. a San Fernando, California company. Karoun issued a major recall earlier this week – but it remains too early to know what other soft cheeses have been implicated.

According to Ron Simon, who is representing many of the Blue Bell ice cream victims, also form Listeria, said in a statement: “Like in the Blue Bell outbreak, most outbreaks of Listeria sicken many more people than are eventually identified. Listeria is often not identified in victims unless the victim is elderly, pregnant, or suffers an underlying medical condition. And even then, if antibiotics are used prior to the proper testing, Listeriosis may not be identified even in victims who are very ill. What we know is that soft cheese, which has often been linked to Listeria outbreaks, must be produced and handled with special care, and in this case, there was a breakdown in basic good food manufacturing and food handling practices.”
