The United States Food and Drug Administration shared
La Fiesta Food Products recall of their ground cinnamon product, adding onto the list of nationally recalled cinnamon products due to lead contamination. The report reads, “Lead is a toxic substance present in our environment in small amounts and everyone is exposed to some lead from daily actions such as inhaling dust, eating food, or drinking water. Exposure to larger amounts of lead can cause lead poisoning . . . While lead can affect nearly every bodily system, its effects depend upon the amount of and duration of lead exposure and age of the person exposed.”
The recalled La Fiesta Food Products ground cinnamon was sold in a .87-ounce bottle, with a UPC number of #032327000449.
The recall was originally initiated by La Fiesta Food Products on March 6, 2024, after the United States Food and Drug Administration discovered a high presence of lead in ground cinnamon samples that had been collected for testing.
As one National Food Poisoning Lawyer, Dr. Tony Coveny shared, “…staying informed about product recalls and food safety alerts is paramount.” He added: “Regularly checking for updates from reliable sources such as the FDA and Food Poisoning News can help ensure consumers are aware of any potential risks associated with the products they purchase and consume. Additionally, practicing safe food handling and storage practices at home can further reduce the risk of exposure to contaminants in food products.”
The United States Food and Drug Administration elaborated on the risk of lead poisoning from the recalled ground cinnamon, warning that “Lead is a toxic substance present in our environment in small amounts and everyone is exposed to some lead from daily actions such as inhaling dust, eating food, or drinking water.” The report stated, “Exposure to larger amounts of lead can cause lead poisoning. While lead can affect nearly every bodily system, its effects depend upon the amount of, and duration of lead exposure and age of the person exposed.”
Customers should strictly avoid consumption of the recalled La Fiesta Food Products ground cinnamon and be vigilant about contacting a healthcare provider in the case of adverse reactions after consumption.
