A voluntary recall has been issued by the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) for multiple brands of salami due to potential Salmonella contamination remains ongoing. Salmonella is a bacterium that can cause serious infections in animals and humans, especially those in vulnerable populations such as young children, the elderly, and individuals with compromised immune systems.

Background

The recall was initiated as part of an investigation by the CFIA into a foodborne illness outbreak.

This recall is related to an outbreak of Salmonella in Canada connected to other salami products from the company.

Distribution

The recalled products were distributed in the Canadian provinces of Alberta, British Columbia, Manitoba, Ontario, Quebec, and Saskatchewan.

Consumer Action

Consumers should check their homes and businesses for the recalled products.

As with all food recalls, consumers are strongly advised to discontinue use of the affected products even if they look or smell safe to eat.

Anyone in possession of the recalled products is requested to not sell, serve, donate, or distribute them.

Consumers should thoroughly sanitize any surface, utensils, or containers that have come into contact with the impacted products.

Consumers in possession of the product can return it to the store of purchase for a refund. Otherwise, recalled foods should be disposed of immediately and safely.

Consumers with additional questions or concerns can contact the CFIA toll-free in Canada or the United States at 800-442-2342 or by email at [email protected].

Health Risks

There have been multiple illnesses and hospitalizations in connection with an outbreak of Salmonella in Canada linked to consumption of Rea-brand salami products.

Any consumers who are experiencing symptoms after contact with the recalled salami should contact their doctor right away, says leading nationwide Salmonella law firm Ron Simon & Associates.

Salmonella is a bacterium that can cause severe gastrointestinal illness in humans. Symptoms typically include diarrhea, fever, and stomach cramps, appearing six hours to six days after exposure to the bacteria. While most people recover without specific treatment, the infection can be severe, especially for young children, the elderly, and individuals with weakened immune systems.
