Purina Animal Nutrition Brand Pet Food Recall Affects Rabbits, Turkeys, and Chicks

There is a recall on multiple animal feed products by Purina Animal Nutrition brand pet food. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) posted the announcement that the pet food brand called “Purina Animal Nutrition” is undertaking a voluntarily recall on numerous batches of rabbit feed, turkey feed, and chick feed. Purina Animal Nutrition LLC, located in Gray Summit, Missouri, issued the recall after receiving complaints from customers that their pet rabbits became ill or were dying after consuming the feed.

The corporation believes the recalled products contain elevated calcium levels and upon further investigation, both the turkey and chick feed were also recalled due to high calcium levels.

Complications from elevated calcium levels in the rabbit feed in the rabbit feed can cause long-term and immediate health problems, specifically from urinary tract infections and kidney stones in rabbits, which can result in death. Symptoms in rabbits include: blood in the urine, loss of appetite, and lethargy. Complications from elevated calcium levels in the chick and turkey feed include kidney stones and deformities in their legs as they grow.

The recalled animal feed was produced between the dates of December 16, 2019 and February 3, 2020. Customers can determine if the feed that they bought is affected, by looking at the lot number which is located on the sewing strip on the bag. Distribution of the recalled product went to 32 states, including Texas. The Purina corporation is advising their customers to throw out the recalled feed or return it to the place of purchase.
