River Falls, Wisconsin based Jack and the Green Sprouts, Inc. have issued a voluntary recall of their Alfalfa and Alfalfa Onion Sprouts due to potential contamination with Listeria moncytogenes (“Listeria”). Listeria is a bacterium that can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections, particularly in vulnerable populations such as young children, pregnant women, the elderly, and individuals with compromised immune systems.
Background
Routing testing by the company uncovered the potential for Listeria contamination.
The company is investigating the cause of the contamination and has temporarily suspended production of the affected products.

Consumer Action
Consumers should check their homes for the recalled products.
As with all food recalls, consumers should discontinue use even if the products look or smell safe to eat.
Consumers may return the affected products to location of purchase for a refund or dispose of them immediately.
Health Risks
As of now, no illnesses or adverse reactions in connection to the recalled products have been reported.
Listeriosis, the infection caused by Listeria monocytogenes, is particularly dangerous for certain vulnerable populations. Pregnant individuals, people aged 65 or older, and those with weakened immune systems are at highest risk. Symptoms can include fever, muscle aches, headache, stiff neck, confusion, loss of balance, and convulsions, sometimes preceded by gastrointestinal symptoms. In pregnant individuals, listeriosis can lead to miscarriages, stillbirths, premature delivery, or life-threatening infections in newborns.
Consumers who are experiencing symptoms of Listeriosis should contact their healthcare provider immediately.
Contaminated sprouts have a long history of causing foodborne illness. In 2023, Chang Farm issued a recall of their mung bean sprouts after routine testing uncovered the potential for bacterial contamination. Last week, Food Poisoning News published an article on why sprouts are dangerous ingredients in retail sandwiches and salads.
Due to the widespread Boar’s Head recall, Listeria has featured prominently in the news over the last several months. So far, 10 deaths and multiple hospitalizations have been confirmed across 19 states.
Commenting on this story, one national Listeria lawyer said, “Listeria is extremely dangerous to certain populations. I strongly urge any consumer with the affected products to dispose of them immediately and then thoroughly sanitize any area they might have touched.”
