Handsome Brook Farms, based in Franklin, New York, has issued a voluntary recall of Organic Pasture Raised 24-Count Eggs sold under the Kirkland Signature brand name due to potential Salmonella contamination. Salmonella is a bacterium that can cause serious infections in animals and humans, especially those in vulnerable populations such as young children, the elderly, and individuals with compromised immune systems.

Background

The recall was initiated after the company discovered that eggs meant for non-retail use were mistakenly packaged and sold in retail packaging. The company said it is taking multiple steps to prevent a recurrence of this incident.

Distribution

The recalled products were distributed only to 25 Costco retail stores in Alabama, Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Tennessee starting on November 22, 2024.

Product Details

  • Brand – Kirkland Signature
  • Product – Organic Pasture-Raised Eggs
  • Quantity – 24 eggs
  • Weight – 48 oz
  • Packaging – Clear plastic carton
  • UPC Code – 9661910680
  • Julian Code – 327
  • Use By Date – January 6, 2025

Consumer Action

As with all food recalls, consumers are strongly advised to discontinue use of the affected product even if it looks or smells safe to eat.

Anyone in possession of the recalled product is requested to not sell, serve, or distribute them.

Consumers should thoroughly sanitize any surface or utensils that have come into contact with the impacted product.

Consumers can return the recalled product to Costco for a refund or should dispose of the product immediately.

Consumers with additional questions or concerns can contact the company by phone at 646-733-4532 Extension 1 from Monday through Friday, 9 am to 6 pm EST or anytime by email at [email protected].

Health Risks

There have been no reported illnesses or injuries in association with the consumption of the recalled products.  However, any consumers who are experiencing symptoms after contact with the affected product should contact their medical provider.

Salmonella is a bacterium that can cause severe gastrointestinal illness in humans. Symptoms typically include diarrhea, fever, and stomach cramps, appearing six hours to six days after exposure to the bacteria. While most people recover without specific treatment, the infection can be severe, especially for young children, the elderly, and individuals with weakened immune systems.

Commenting on this article, one national Salmonella lawyer said, “Consumers in the impacted states who have recently shopped at Costco should check their refrigerators for the recalled eggs. Even if some of the eggs have been consumed, I highly recommend throwing them out or returning them to the store.”
