The June 27, 2024 recall of Santa Ana, California-based Prophet Premium Blends, LLC Diamond Shruumz-brand infused cones, chocolate bars, and gummies due to toxic levels of muscimol is still ongoing.  Muscimol is a chemical found in mushrooms of the genus Amanita.

Background

Based on complaints received in May from consumers who reported being sickened by consumption of certain Diamond Shruumz products, a company investigation showed that the products contained elevated levels of muscimol.

The affected products were distributed to the following states:  AK, AL, AR, AZ, CA, CO, CT, DC, DE, FL, GA, HI, IA, ID, IL, IN, KS, KY, MA, MD, ME, MI, MN, MO, MS, MT, NC, ND, NE, NH, NJ, NM, NV, NY, OH, OK, OR, PA, PR, RI, SC, SD, TN, TX, UT, VA, VT, WA, WI, WV, and WY.

The company and FDA are still investigating the cause of the illnesses.  In an announcement, the company said that “…Muscimol could be a potential cause of symptoms consistent with those observed in persons who became ill after eating Diamond Shruumz products.”

Consumer and Commercial Action

Consumers with the affected products are urged to stop using them, even if they look or smell safe to consume.

Consumers are advised to dispose of the items and contact the company by phone at 209-314-0881 or email at [email protected] with their order number to receive a refund.  The company is also requesting that consumers confirm the affected products have been thrown away and are no longer available for consumption.

Retailers and wholesalers should immediately stop distributing the product, quarantine it, and contact their sales representative to arrange for its return and refund. Prophet Premium Blends will then provide return shipping labels, verify the inventory, and process the refund.

Health Risks

Reported symptoms have included signs of central nervous system excitation such as seizures, agitation, and involuntary muscle contractions. Additionally, symptoms of central nervous system depression like loss of consciousness, confusion, and sleepiness have been observed. Gastrointestinal issues like nausea and vomiting, along with cardiovascular problems such as abnormal heart rates and high or low blood pressure, have also been reported.

Commenting on this story, one national food poisoning lawyer said, “Because these products are often marketed as candy, young children and teens might be attracted to them.  I recommend that consumers who have purchased the affected products to immediately dispose of them and ensure they are no longer accessible to anyone for consumption.”
