Salmonella Recall of Hy-Vee Products Expanded

Hy-Vee in the news again with another product recall

Hy-Vee, Inc., a large chain of employee-owned grocery stores based in West Des Moines, Iowa, has issued another recall for one of its food products that may be contaminated with salmonella. Hy-Vee was notified by a supplier that its cheesecakes made with Diamond Crystal Brands cheesecake mix may pose a health hazard to consumers.

Hy-Vee has recalled 32 varieties of cheesecakes, in 8-ounce and 32-ounce packages with best if used dates ranging from December 6, 2018, through January 11, 2019. The grocery store issued several recall notices in 2018, including for products made with caramelized mushrooms and fire-roasted tomatoes as well as for their Spring Pasta Salad.

The recalled cheesecake mixture was distributed to 117 of the Hy-Vee chain’s 249 grocery stores. Potentially contaminated cheesecakes may have been sold throughout Hy-Vee’s 8 state region, including Iowa, Illinois, Missouri, Kansas, Nebraska, South Dakota, Minnesota, and Wisconsin. Although the store has removed the cheesecakes from their shelves, consumers who have already purchased these cheesecakes should not eat them.

Salmonella is an organism that can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Healthy persons infected with Salmonella often experience fever, diarrhea (which may be bloody), nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain. In rare circumstances, infection with Salmonella can result in the organism getting into the bloodstream and producing more severe illnesses such as arterial infections (i.e., infected aneurysms), endocarditis and arthritis.

The 32 varieties of recalled cheesecake, in 8-ounce and 32-ounce plastic containers, include Cherry, Oreo, Pumpkin Fluff, Strawberry, Mini Cheesecake, Turtle, Flag, Mint Chip Bettercreme, Strawberry Bettercreme, Lemon Bettercreme, Pumpkin Bettercreme, Chocolate Bettercreme, Sea Salted Caramel Bettercreme, Golden Oreo Bettercreme, Oreo Bettercreme, and Smores Bettercreme.
