Country Fresh Vegetables Recalled due to Listeria monocytogenes bacteria
A recall has been issued for Country Fresh diced vegetables and kabobs sold at Southeastern Grocers, Publix, and Walmart stores in Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, and Mississippi because of a finding of Listeria monocytogenes in routine testing. The suspected contaminate is believed to have been in the marinade used to prepare the vegetables. The products all have a “Use by” date in August, so they have likely been used or discarded at this time, but health investigators are warning people to check their refrigerators and freezers, since people may still have these products. Freezing does not kill Listeria monocytogenes bacteria.
The recalled vegetables include diced vegetables in stir fry ensembles, diced vegetables prepared for making fajitas, premade skewered kabobs, and plastic clamshell containers of various diced peppers. All of the vegetables were sold under the brand names “Country Fresh,” “Kabob Sensations,” or “Marketside.”

Listeria can cause serious illness in more vulnerable victims, including death an both stillbirths and miscarriages. For this reason, it is especially dangerous for the elderly, the young, or pregnant women to consume any product that has the potential to be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes bacteria.
Southeastern Grocers, Publix, and Walmart Recall Vegetables Out of Abundance of Caution
At present, the FDA and the company, Country Fresh, have identified no human illnesses. Listeria monocytogenes bacteria, however, is very difficult to detect, often not identified in persons with non-life threatening illness and not showing up in most stool cultures. Traditionally, Listeria monocytogenes bacteria is identified in blood cultures with those have septic symptoms, and in cerebral spinal fluid cultures with those for whom meningitis is suspected. Following stillbirths or late-term miscarriages, sometimes a placental culture is performed.
