Doral, Florida-based Tama Corporation has issued a voluntary recall for its product, “Queso de Mano PAISA”, due to concerns about Listeria contamination. Listeria is a bacterium that can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections, particularly in vulnerable populations such as young children, the elderly, and individuals with compromised immune systems.

Background

Routine laboratory product testing of the specified lot code revealed the presence of Listeria.  A second test confirmed the findings of the first, leading to the company issuing the recall.

This specific batch was distributed exclusively in Salt Lake City, Utah, and was only sold at Rancho Markets stores.

Upon learning of the contamination, Tama Corporation said they “immediately contacted the involved supermarket chain to halt its sale and account for all the product belonging to that vat.”

The company also said they are working with their product manufacturer, the Food and Drug Administration, and the United States Department of Agriculture to prevent similar incidents in the future.

Product Details

  • Product Description: “Queso de Mano PAISA”, a type of cheese.
  • Packaging:  24-ounce plastic container
  • Lot Code: The affected lot number is 2420104, located on the packaging lid
  • UPC code:  838795000338
  • Best Buy date:  May 16, 2024

Consumer Action

As with all recalls, consumers with the affected product are strongly urged not to consume it.  The product should be disposed of immediately or returned to place of purchase.

For further information or questions, consumers can contact Tama Corporation at 305-592-1717 (Monday to Friday, 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM EST) or by email at [email protected].

Health Risks

Fortunately no illnesses related to the affected product have been confirmed but consumers who may have been exposed to the product or are showing symptoms should contact their medical provider.  Listeriosis is an infection that causes fever, gastrointestinal symptoms, and muscle aches. It’s caused by the consumption of food contaminated by bacterium Listeria monocytogenes.

The people most commonly affected by listeriosis include pregnant women, newborns, individuals with weakened immune systems, the elderly, and cancer patients.

Commenting on this story, one national food safety attorney said, “Remember, food recalls are essential for public health, and it’s crucial to stay informed. If you have purchased this product, take the necessary precautions and follow the guidance provided by Tama Corporation.”
