Coconut sickens victims in multiple states – at least eight identified:

Coconut products sold by a Colorado-based natural grocery chain are part of a multi-state outbreak of salmonella infection. Vitamin Cottage Natural Food Markets, Inc., is recalling Natural Grocers brand 10-ounce Coconut Smiles Organic due to the possibility of salmonella contamination.

Six people have reported illnesses directly related to eating Coconut Smiles Organic products purchased from Natural Grocers stores. The company has found evidence of salmonella contamination in its own tests and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) confirmed that a sample they tested was positive for salmonella.

The recalled Coconut Smiles Organic product is packaged in clear plastic bags weighing 10 ounces and bears the “Natural Grocers” label. All packages with packed-on dates prior to 18-075 (Mar. 16, 2018) are subject to recall. The packed-on date can be found in the bottom left-hand corner of the label.

Coconut Smiles Organic products have been distributed to 145 Natural Grocers stores located in Arkansas, Arizona, Colorado, Iowa, Idaho, Kansas, Minnesota, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, Nevada, New Mexico, North Dakota, Oklahoma, Oregon, Texas, Utah, Washington and Wyoming.

The company has suspended production of the recalled coconut products until the FDA’s investigation into the salmonella contamination is complete. Food safety concerns dictate that anyone who has purchased these products should not consume them.

Salmonella can cause gastrointestinal issues for healthy people and even more serious symptoms in more vulnerable populations. If you suspect that you or a loved one has been infected with salmonella, it’s critical to contact your healthcare provider and receive care immediately.
