A recall first initiated on March 10, 2025 by New York Wholesale Group, based in Hicksville, New York, of Zaarah Herbals-brand Bhringraj Powder due to contamination with elevated levels of lead and arsenic and Zaarah Herbals-brand Gurmar Powder, Vasaka Powder, and Rasayan Churan due to contamination with elevated levels of lead remains ongoing.  Lead is a neurotoxin that can affect nearly every system in the human body and is especially dangerous for young children. Arsenic poisoning can cause a variety of health problems from minor symptoms to deadly conditions.

Background

No press release was issued for these recalls. How the elevated presence of lead and arsenic was discovered has not yet been released.

Distribution

The impacted products were distributed in California, Connecticut, New Jersey, and New York.

Consumer Action

Consumers are advised to check their homes for the recalled items.

As with all food recalls, consumers are strongly advised to discontinue use of the affected product even if it looks or smells safe to eat.

Anyone in possession of the recalled products is requested to not sell, serve, donate or distribute them.

Consumers should contact the place of purchase to see if the affected products can be returned for a refund or should throw them away.

Health Risks

The company said that there have been no reports of injuries in connection with consumption of the recalled product. Anyone who has been exposed to the product, and is experiencing illness or adverse reactions, should contact a medical provider immediately.

Elevation in lead can lead directly to decreased cognitive function, reduced IQ, difficulty in problem solving, reduced or stunted brain development or reduced neuroplasticity. Children are particularly vulnerable because their bodies absorb lead more readily than adults. As a result, elevations in anger, drug use, and even violent crime have been identified in those who suffer lead poisoning during formative years.

Arsenic poisoning can cause a variety of health problems from nausea and vomiting to more serious issues like liver and kidney damage and increased risk of cancer.

Commenting on this article, the nation’s leading lead poisoning lawyer said, “The last two years have seen a large number of recalls due to elevated levels of lead. Consumers should regularly check the FDA website to stay on top of products that have been recently recalled.”
