Listeria Recall Grows

Listeria Monocytogenes is the cause of yet another cheese recall, again linked to Middlebury, Indiana company Deutsch Kase Haus, LLC that serves as a supplier of cheese to many cheese manufacturers.  The company issuing the recall is Saputo Inc., a Toronto company that sells its products internationally, under such brand names as Saputo, Alexis de Portneuf, Armstrong, COON, Cracker Barrel*, Dairyland, DairyStar, Friendship Dairies, Frigo Cheese Heads, La Paulina, Milk2Go/Lait’s Go, Neilson, Nutrilait, Scotsburn*, Stella, Sungold, Treasure Cave and Woolwich Dairy.  The cheese that is the subject of the recall ws produced at the Saputo Green Bay, Wisconsin facility, and includes various Gouda products.  The recal specifically names Great Midwest® Applewood Smoked Gouda and Dutchmark® Smoked Gouda.  More information on the specific UPC and container sizes is available on the FDA webpage.

Recall  Precautionary at Present

Saputo issued the recall after Deutsch Kase Haus cheeses notified them that testing showed some of the cheese it provided had the potential to be contaminated, but so far, no human illnesses have been linked to consumption of these cheeses.

Understanding Listeria Outbreaks: Listerial Meningitis

The attorneys at Ron Simon & Associates have worked on numerous Listeria outbreaks, including the recent national Blue Bell Ice Cream outbreak and the CRF Frozen Vegetable outbreak.  In most cases, the CDC acknowledges that the majority of individuals who become sick with Listeriosis will not be identified in the Listeria outbreak because no blood or Cerebral Spinal Fluid culture will have been performed, of if they are, they will follow administration of brad spectrum antibiotics.  While most bacterial infections show up in routine stool cultures, forming the basis for prosecuting a food poisoning lawsuit, in Listeria outbreaks most of the victims who acquire listeriosis receive a differential diagnosis of Listerial Meningitis or encephalitis.  This is true because Listeria can bypass the blood brain barrier.  In other cases, again because Listeria can infiltrate the placenta, pregnant women often suffer miscarriages or still births.  Often the mother’s test positive for Listeria or her physician orders a placental culture of the placental material post DNC.

As food poisoning lawyers, the attorneys at on Simon & Associates work with the victims of Listeria outbreaks, as well as Salmonella outbreaks and E. coli outbreaks, to help them attain compensation for their injuries.  For more information about the firm, information about the Saputo recall, or to talk to someone about a Food Poisoning lawsuit or claim, call 1-888-335-4901.
