Chipotle Norovirus Outbreak in Sterling, Virginia Reminiscent of Simi Valley Outbreak Two Years Ago
The outbreak of norovirus at the Sterling, Virginia, Chipotle is a stark reminder that food safety cannot be taken for granted, and that a commitment to good food production standards and personal hygiene among employees is of paramount importance. Now, with news of yet another outbreak of food poisoning linked to one of its restaurants, the popular chain is seeing another fall in Chipotle stock prices.

There is no official count yet, but the outbreak seems to have much more wide-spread than initially reported. One victim, claiming to have been treated at a regional medical center, reported hearing that as many as three dozen victims of the outbreak had been treated at that location alone. No official numbers of confirmation is available at this time and the source of the norovirus (how it was introduced into the food) remains unclear. In 2015, some blamed the company’s pressure on sick employees to come to work even while ill.
