Mama Stortini’s Restaurant & Bar Linked to Norovirus Outbreak in Seattle Area:  Restaurant Closed on December 12th Subject to Investigation

A popular restaurant in King County, Washington State, has been closed pending an investigation into a norovirus outbreak.  The Mama Stortini’s Restaurant & Bar, which is located South of Seattle, just North of Fedral Way, at 401 NE Northgate Way, #1103, was closed by a Public Health food inspector on December 12, 2017.  The closure was ordered just before lunch, at 11:00 am, to out of concern for public safety and to enable an to investigation into the foodborne transmission of norovirus.

Public Health food inspectors ordered the closure after receiving reports of at least 15 victims, belonging to five separate patron groups, having acquired norovirus following consumption of Mama Stortini’s Restaurant & Bar food on December 5th and 6th.  The investigation is ongoing.

Other Actions by King County Public Health Officers – Miller’s Guild Closed Due to Salmonella

Public Health food inspectors recently closed another popular eatery, the J B Garden located at 10410 Greenwood Ave, #A, Seattle, WA 98133, and ordered it closed after a Public Health food inspector identified serious food safety violations.  The Dec. 7, 2017 closure order, effective at 4:00 pm on the 7th, followed identification of, at least, these deficiencies:

  • Potentially hazardous foods at unsafe temperatures

  • Inadequate facilities to control temperature of potentially hazardous food, hot holding

  • Foods not protected from cross contamination

  • Poor personal hygiene practices – handwashing

In addition, the Miller’s Guild located at 612 Stewart St, Seattle, WA 98101 was closed on Nov. 21, 2017 by King County Public Health.  Miller’s Guild was implicated in a salmonella food poisoning outbreak.   According to authorities, at least 6 victims from four separate patron groups acquired salmonella food poisoning.  The victims reported eating at Miller’s Guild  restaurant between 8/15/17 –11/3/17.  One of the victims was hospitalized.
