Cream cheese products served at Panera Bread bakeries in recall for possible listeria
One production run of 2 oz. cream cheese products tested positive for the presence of Listeria monocytogenes, so Panera Bread is recalling all related products. Panera has announced a nationwide preemptive, voluntary recall of all 2 oz. and 8 oz. cream cheese products sold in its US bakery-cafes.
The recall includes unexpired 2 oz. and 8 oz. cream cheese products with an expiration date on or before 4/2/18:
Affected 2 oz. Cream Cheese Varieties: Plain Cream Cheese, Reduced- Fat Plain Cream Cheese, Reduced-Fat Chive & Onion Cream Cheese, Reduced-Fat Honey Walnut Cream Cheese, Reduced-Fat Wild Blueberry Cream Cheese.
Affected 8 oz. Cream Cheese Varieties: Plain Cream Cheese, Reduced- Fat Plain Cream Cheese, Reduced-Fat Chive & Onion Cream Cheese, Reduced-Fat Honey Walnut Cream Cheese, Reduced-Fat Wild Blueberry Cream Cheese.
The recall only affects Panera Bread’s US stores and only the cream cheese products listed. No other Panera Bread food products are involved.
The company states that tests conducted before and after the production run that initiated the recall have returned a negative result. No one has yet been sickened by consuming the cream cheese products.
Consumers should be aware that food safety involves not only discarding or returning the tainted products, but also cleaning any surface the cream cheese products may have touched in the home. Countertops and refrigerators should be cleaned with bleach and consumers should then wash their hands thoroughly.
Listeria monocytogenes is an organism that can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems.
