Four dog food products recalled for salmonella contamination
When humans come in contact with pet food that is contaminated, they can be affected just as much as the pets who consume the food. Four pet food manufacturers have issued recalls for their dog food, after detecting salmonella in samples of their raw pet food products.
The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has reported that at least six animals have taken ill or died after eating the contaminated food and at least two young children have become ill after coming in contact with the dog food.
The recalled products include:
Redbarn Pet Products – 7-inch Bully Stick three pack, sold in a 2.4-ounce green plastic bag, marked with an expiration date reading “112120ABC” on the side. The product UPC is 78518425105.
Darwin’s Natural Pet Products – ZooLogics dog food products, including ZooLogics Chicken and Vegetable Meals for Dogsand ZooLogics Duck and Vegetable Meals for Dogs. Listeria monocytogenes was also detected in some Darwin’s Natural and ZooLogics products.
Raws for Paws Dog Food – 5-pound and 1-pound sealed plastic tubes of its Ground Turkey Pet Food, packaged into both regular Turkey Pet Food cases and Pet Food Combo Pack cases. The recalled products include case codes 9900008, 9900009, 9900014, and 9900015.
Smokehouse Pet Products – 4-ounce bags of dog treats labeled as “Beefy Munchies.” The recalled bags are marked with the product UPC 78565857957, with a best-used-by date of October 25, 2019 stamped on the back.
Salmonella symptoms in humans include diarrhea, fever, and stomach cramps. These symptoms can last up to a week. Anyone with these dog food products should throw them away without touching the food itself and thoroughly clean any surfaces the products may have touched.
