Kansas City Baking Company: Ready-to-Eat Meat That is Not Inspected May Cause Food Poisoning

Ready-to-eat meat products recalled, not inspected

Meat products that have not been inspected by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) are subject to undetected contamination caused by salmonella, e. coli, listeria, and other bacteria that can result in serious illness in consumers.

On March 1, the USDA’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) Office of Investigations, Enforcement and Audit (OIEA) visited the Kansas City Baking Company’s operations and found that it was producing meat products that were not being properly inspected by the USDA.

Food safety regulations require that products considered to be “USDA amenable,” meaning they are subject to USDA FSIS inspection, must be inspected before being shipped out for consumption, to ensure there are no contaminants that may cause food poisoning. The Kansas City Baking Company is now recalling several meat products that were produced on various dates from February 2017 through February 27, 2018.

The recalled products do not bear dates or codes and were not inspected for possible contamination. They were shipped to cafes in Kansas and Missouri.

The recall includes:

  • 11-oz. foil wrapped packages of “BREAKFAST BURRITO SAUSAGE.”
  • 11-oz. foil wrapped packages of “BREAKFAST BURRITO BACON.”
  • 11-oz. foil wrapped packages of “BREAKFAST BURRITO CHORIZO.”
  • Individually wrapped packages of “BACON QUICHE PIE.”
  • Individually wrapped packages of “SAUSAGE QUICHE PIE.”
  • Individually wrapped packages of “CHORIZO QUICHE PIE.”
  • Individually wrapped packages of “SAUSAGE BACON QUICHE PIE.”
  • Individually wrapped packages of “HAM QUICHE PIE.”
  • Individually wrapped packages of “HAM AND PARMESAN CROISSANT.”

Consumers are urged not to eat any of these products if they have purchased them.
