Mini eclairs recalled for potential health risk

A North Carolina company has issued a voluntary recall of frozen, packaged mini eclairs due to a serious food safety issue. The products were run on the same production line on which another product had previously tested positive for listeria. Delizza brand mini eclairs are made by Poppies International, Inc., in Battleboro, NC, and are sold in popular grocery chains throughout the country.

The recalled Belgian frozen custard mini eclairs had the potential to also be contaminated by the listeria bacteria found on the production line. Although no instances of illness have been reported, consumers should not eat any of the Delizza brand mini eclairs that were made from March 5 to March 9, 2018. The recalled products can also be identified by their lot number, L1M1018 Best Before 09/09/19, found on the side of the tub. These products should be disposed of properly or returned to the store.

Listeria bacteria was found on the production line after a routine sampling by the company. Food safety concerns can arise when bacteria is transferred from a previously produced food product. In addition, unlike other strains of bacteria, listeriosis multiplies in foods stored in the refrigerator, so if a consumer were to thaw a frozen mini éclair that had been contaminated by listeria, it would cause that bacteria to spread.

The common symptoms of listeriosis, caused by listeria bacteria contamination of a food product, include muscle aches, fever, and diarrhea. However, if the infection spreads to the nervous system, the symptoms can become more serious. A stiff neck, seizures, the sudden inability to balance, mental confusion, and headache are all symptoms of listeriosis.

Listeriosis is a serious food poisoning issue. If you have any questions about listeriosis or would like to discuss a potential food poisoning case, contact the food poisoning lawyers at 1-888-335-4901.
